In fairytales, there are generally guidelines that most follow. It is usually set in older, medieval times, with dragons and princesses. There will be some aspect of magic, from fairy godmothers granting wishes to witches casting spells. There will be some discontent in the home life, perhaps from a wicked stepmother or cruel stepsister, even a neglectful father, or maybe no family at all. The mother is often dead, because miscarriage was an unfortunate commonality in these times. There will be someone who needs to be saved from this unhappy situation, almost always a beautiful young female of the perfect age to be married to any handsome prince that happens along her. There is some sort of trial the prince faces in order to get to the maiden, or to keep them from whatever they were set out to do. A wise figure will come along and help the hero to beat the evil, and in the outcome of fairy tales, the forces of good prevail against the opposing evil. The tale teaches a lesson to those listening to them, showing how good will triumph, how nothing good can come from wanting more, or trying to make young girls used to the idea of how they are expected to behave in society, quiet and perfect and useless without a big strong prince to protect them from all harm.
